HUGE GREEK ISLAND Embroidered Patchwork Panel dates from the Early 19th century! This Museum Mounted handwoven Ecru Linen patchwork Sampler measures 34" X 38" The textile is covered with an amazing variety of silk hand embroidered stylized floral and symbolic designs!
The muted Jewel tone silk floss colors are varied from amber to soft garnet & sapphire, and jade to apple to forest for the greens, with light black edging, all meticulously hand stitched on ecru linen or homespun fabric pieces that are joined together to form the large piece!
good condition, there is surface wear on the silk in a few places, and some age darkening of the fabric here and there, but it is minimal!
I believe this Sampler Exhibits just about every style of Embroidery from the area of the Islands, including
Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Zakynthos, Corfu, Lefkada, kefalonia, Skiathos, Aegina and other areas of the Aegean Sea, including the mainland's Ancient Anatolia, and the Ottoman Empire! With influences from Crete, Rhodes and Bulgaria! A Rare and Fascinating Textile!
The Museum mounting is Stretched on a wood frame with a backing of natural muslin and hanging hardware in place. Embroidery can be removed for shipping to Europe. SOLD
